Obituary for Marijo Dawson (Almy)

Marijo Dawson, 82, of Alma, Arkansas passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024 in her home. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was born October 6, 1941 in Keystone, OK to the late Fred and Gwendolyn (Ward) Almy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, JE Dawson and a son, Brad Dawson. She dearly loved her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On any given day, Marijo Dawson, aka “Granny Jo’, could be found gardening, horse riding or roasting hot dogs in the pasture with her kids and grandkids. She was a skilled hostess who gathered the entire family together for holidays and cooked the ultimate comfort meal, making sure everyone had plenty to eat and take home as leftovers. There was nothing she couldn’t do that she set her mind to; her creativity served her well her whole life through. Her talents were vast, spanning from sewing and quilting, to making beautiful music on the piano, to completing crossword puzzles and playing along with game shows like a pro.

Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Granny Jo would attest to her kindness-she cared deeply for others and thought so rarely of herself. She had a way of walking into a room and making sure everyone felt welcome and included, and never ran out of things to say in a conversation. She loved telling stories from the “Good Old Days” like they were yesterday and was always willing to share her wisdom. Granny Jo wasn’t afraid to admit her mistakes. Her sense of humor was often at her own expense, because, as she said, “if you can’t laugh at yourself, you’re missing out on a lot of fun.” She was a role model and inspiration. As a woman of grace, generosity and understanding, she is leaving behind a legacy of love that will live on through her family.

Funeral service will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at Ocker Chapel of Alma with interment in Pope Cemetery under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.

Survivors include her daughter, Kelly Keener and husband Keith of Alma; a son, Greg Dawson and wife Vickie of Natural Dam; sisters, Marilyn Naud and Peggy Arnold both of Sand Springs, OK; grandchildren, Ryan Atwell (Cana), Jake Dawson, Zachary Dawson (Amber), Michael Dawson (Chelsea), Matthew Dawson and Kate Keener and 11 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Zak Dawson, Matt Dawson, Ryan Atwell, Jake Dawson, Michael Dawson, Kate Keener and Greg Dawson.
