Johnny “John” Allen Burgess of Van Buren was called home, Sunday, May 14, 2023, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. John was born November 18, 1943, to Earnest and Laura (Adams) Burgess in Van Buren, Arkansas. John was 79 years, 5 months, and 26 days old. John was retired and enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking and spending time with his family.
John married Edna Taylor February 27, 1970 and they were married for over 53 years. They had five children, ten grandchildren, seventeen great-children, nieces, nephews, and many friends. John loved cheering on his Razorback football team and every Saturday during football season he would be calling to see what channel and time the Hogs would be on television.
John is survived by his loving wife Edna Burgess, of the home. Four children Judy Taylor and husband John of Van Buren, Arkansas; Mike Burgess and wife Shawna of Fort Smith, Arkansas; Carl Bagley and wife Frankie of Van Buren, Arkansas; and Tammy Simmons and husband Allen of Van Buren, Arkansas. Ten grandchildren, Andre Lewis of Denver, Colorado; Kyra Lewis of Van Buren, Arkansas; Katie Godwin and husband Blake of Van Buren; Emmie Burgess of Fort Smith, Arkansas; Christopher Bagley of Van Buren, Arkansas; A.J. Abel and wife Kasi of Alma, Arkansas; Matthew Bagley and wife Megan of Fort Smith, Arkansas; Shawn Bagley of Fort Smith, Arkansas; Damon Capps of Wynne, Arkansas; and Durane Roachell of Eugene, Oregon. Seventeen great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Laura Burgess; Son, Richard Bagley; Brother, Tommy Burgess.
John’s visitation will be Friday May 19, 2023, from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Ocker Funeral Home 700 Jefferson Street Van Buren, AR.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. Saturday May 20, 2023, at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Cemetery Van Buren, Arkansas. Arrangements are being entrusted to Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren, Arkansas.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Hearts of Hospice in Fort Smith, Arkansas and John and Edna’s many neighbors who have helped during this time.
Pallbearers will be Carl Bagley, Andre Lewis, Christopher Bagley, Matthew Bagley, Shawn Bagley, and Blake Godwin.
Honorary pallbearers are A.J. Abel and all great-grandchildren.
