Obituary for Frances Ann "Ann" DuVall

Frances Ann DuVall, 88, of Van Buren, passed away 22 May in a Van Buren nursing home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Uri DuVall and Bertha Mae (Evans) DuVall, both of Van Buren, and her brother, Paul David DuVall of Van Buren. She is survived by her niece, Sarah DuVall Murray of Pennington, NJ; her niece’s husband, Gregory Murray; and their children, Isaac, Samuel, and Eleanor, all of Pennington; and a nephew, Matthew E. DuVall of Deerfield, IL. She is also survived by first cousins Jean Ellyne Dougan and Elaine Bell, both of Van Buren; Dan Evans of Fort Smith; Niolene Stanley of Fayetteville; Dale Evans of Goshen; Angie Benham of Stillwell, OK; David Evans of Brookville, FL; and Frank Evans of Daniel Island, SC.

Ann was a 1953 graduate of Van Buren High School. She received a B.A. in music (1957) from the College of the Ozarks (Clarksville) and an M.A. in education (1975) from the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville). She taught vocal music for over 30 years, serving initially at Van Buren High School, then Kimmons and Ramsey junior high schools in Fort Smith. She served as choir director at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Fort Smith. Prior to public school teaching, Ann lived in Dallas, TX and worked for the Dallas Public Library.

Ann deeply appreciated music, art, and literature; she performed frequently in local churches, sang with the Fort Smith Symphony as contralto soloist, and appeared in concerts at the Fort Smith Municipal Auditorium and Masonic Temple. A life-long lover of books and patron of libraries, Ann read voraciously. She was an ardent aunt and a doting great aunt, and in retirement, an abiding caregiver to her mother, Bertha. Those who knew Ann well appreciated her quick wit and low tolerance for nonsense. Ann loved all animals, and cared especially for cats. No formal service is planned; private interment was held at Gracelawn Cemetery in Van Buren. Memorial donations may be sent to Fort Smith Animal Haven, 4800 S 46th St., Fort Smith, AR 72903 (https://www.fsmah.org/).
