Bob Vandergriff was born in Van Buren, Arkansas on December 7, 1925 and passed away on August 6, 2019. Bob was a resident of Van Buren, Arkansas at the time of his death. After graduating from Van Buren High School in 1943 Bob served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, training as a radio operator in B-17’s and B-29’s. His squadron was in Riverside, California ready to ship out to the Pacific Theater when the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (thankfully sparring him from combat). After the war ended he came home on one week furlough on a train from Pueblo, Colorado to Van Buren to marry his high school sweetheart, Betty Brant. They were married on November 10, 1945. He returned to the Army, was discharged in 1946 and attended college on the G.I. Bill at the University of Arkansas, graduating in 1948. Bob was preceded in death by his sister Earnestine Corey and his brothers, L.F., Jr., Harry, Ray and Jimmy.

Bob was an insurance adjustor for Light Adjustment Co. for many years before opening his own independent claims adjusting company in 1974. He retired in 1999. He was a member of City Heights United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school as recently as earlier this summer. Teaching was a natural complement to his love for studying the Bible.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Betty Vandergriff, his son, David Vandergriff, his sister-in-law Barbara Vandergriff, numerous nieces and nephews to whom he was affectionately known as, “Uncle Bobby,” and a host of friends.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the funeral home.

I have known Bob since I was a young teenager and attended the First Methodist Church in Van Buren. He and Betty were our MYF leaders. Not enough space to write all the nice words about him. Love you Bob and happy you were part of my life. Joyce Gelly Patton
