John was my friend. We shared many experiences during the years I was his pastor -- including some funerals of family members. But what I remember is a strong man who refused to stay down when knocked down. I remember a man who was always ready -- and willing -- to help when I needed help or when the church (or the old church bus) needed John's touch again. I remember a humble man who came to me to try to learn how to be more comfortable praying in public. I remember a hard working man who loved his family without reservation -- proud of his hard working nurse wife -- proud of his daughters and he had a special pride in a son who was serving his country. Ruth -- I love you and know you must have ambiguous feelings of loss and relief that John's suffering is over. My prayers for comfort and blessings on all of you -- Cathy, Audrey, David and you, the matriarch of a clan that carries the legacy of John Kelly -- my friend. Love, Phip Sams

Ruth, I have you and your family in our prayers at this time. I have so many sweet memories of John, beginning with my first mental image of him walking the chickens. I imagined him with a leash for 2000 chickens, like a dog walker. I will always remember how he protected the ladies that went to Mexico with him, Bill and our youth. He protected us from gross jokes and actions of silly young men. He stood outside the men’s restroom door so I could go in and be safe — and have an empty bladder. And that’s just the tip of my memories. My prayers will be that The Holy Spirit helps you through the next hard days. I love you, Sarah Sams.
