Obituary for Maxie Dell Walker

Maxie Dell Walker, 85, of Fort Smith, Arkansas passed gently from this life on January 6, 2019 in Van Buren, Arkansas. He was born on May 6, 1933 in Altus, Oklahoma to Gardner and Faye Walker. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister DeEtte Walker and an older brother, William (Buddy) Walker. Maxie was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and a longstanding member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He married his college sweetheart, Gerre Potts, in 1955, the same year that he graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Southwestern State University in Oklahoma. Maxie was always a hard worker, having started selling papers and shining shoes before he was even old enough to have a paper route. He was a salesman by profession having worked many years for Squibb Pharmaceuticals and in later life for Midwest Refreshments. Maxie was dearly loved by all who knew him and he had a strong, positive influence on the lives of those whose path he crossed.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation was under the direction of Ocker-Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith, AR.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gerre Walker of the home; three daughters, DeEtte Walker and her husband John McDonald of Atlanta, GA, Janine Whitson and her husband Alan of Fort Smith, AR and Darla Walker Boyd and her husband John of Fort Smith, AR; one sister, Lila Shadid of Altus, OK; three grandchildren, Alan Whitson, Tamara Sanders and Lighla Whitson and three great grandchildren, Halee and Aaron Sanders and Kaylee Whitson.
