Obituary for David Lee Nichols

David Lee Nichols, 71 of Van Buren entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus, the morning of Friday, November 30, 2018. He was born August 6, 1947 in Aberdeen, Washington to Oliver Williams Nichols and Mary Orpha (Fields) Nichols. David’s parents died when he was ten years old. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in December of 1966 serving two tours of Vietnam as a vehicle repairman. A total of six years. He earned four medals and several badges; he was a POW in Vietnam for two weeks, he escaped by tricking and overpowering a guard then running through the jungle toward his own camp with a north Vietnamese Colonel running right on his heels. The colonel was taken as a POW within David’s own Unit. David was a lovable patient man, easy to get along with. He drove from Missoula, Montana, to Sallisaw, Oklahoma to marry Peggy Sue Smith on April 10, 2008. David and Sue moved to Legacy Heights Independent Living in October 2013 due to David’s failing health and made many friends there. The Veterans Administration declared him 100% service connected disabled due to repeated exposure in both Vietnam tours to the herbicide Agent Orange.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 4, 2018 U.S. National Cemetery Pavilion in Fort Smith with military honors under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Sue of the home; sister-in-law, Paula J. Friday (Todd) and his loving in-laws, Pete and Peggy Corrine Smith.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
