Obituary for Doris May Garner (Armstrong)

Doris May Garner (Armstrong)
Doris May Garner (nee Armstrong) went to join her Lord on Tuesday, February 10, 2015. She was a homemaker and a Kansas girl at heart but considered herself a Razorback through and through. She traveled the world with her husband Bob and daughters, Patricia and carol, courtesy of the United States Air Force. Moving every three years required making new friends every year, and Doris stayed in touch with them way before the Internet and Facebook. When Doris and Bob settled in Van Buren, she quickly became active in her church, community and state. She was the consummate volunteer. She was a member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church and served the Lord through her church all her life. Doris was a lifetime member of the Crawford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary (now Summit); serving on the Board and volunteering in many capacities. She especially enjoyed being Mrs. Santa Claus each year. Her lovely gray hair and bun fit the role well. Politics were a big part of Doris’ life. A Yellow Dog Democrat, she was extremely proud of working with Bill Clinton from the early days when he first ran for AR Attorney General. Attending both of President Clinton’s inaugurations was a reward for many years of hard work. She worked at the polls and served on the Crawford County Democratic Committee. Doris joined the Bond Special Club of Extension Homemakers, serving as Club President for the first time in 1974 and holding many offices, including State President from 1981 to 1983. Through EHC, she began working with the Crawford County Fair Board, judging fairs all across Northwest Arkansas and attending more conventions of the Arkansas Fair Managers Association than she could count. She was also a devoted supporter of the Crawford County 4-H and the Arkansas 4-H Foundation, enjoying this work for over 50 years. In keeping with Doris’ zest for life, she was an active member of the Women’s League, Red Hat Society, Railroad Club, Literary Club and Book Review Club. Doris biggest joy in life was being with and doting on her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Just as Doris’ family was always uppermost in her heart, she will always be uppermost in ours; Fond memories of our grandma GG, Doris May Armstrong Gardner will remain with us always. She was preceded in death by husband Robert M. Garner; both parents, Archie and Ruth (Hill); two sisters, Betty Seaborn and Wanda Bishop; two brothers, J.R. & Robert Armstrong; one son-in-law, David DeLozier.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Friday, February 13, 2015 at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren.

She is survived by two daughters, Pat Adelman and husband, Stan of Fayetteville, Carol Sines and husband, Howard of Van Buren; five grandchildren, Michael, Jeremy, Lisa, Mindy & Nicole; Seven great grandchildren, Justin, Mikayla, Anna, Jake, Nick, Zoe & Dava, and one honorary daughter Cheryl Stewart.

The Family will visit with relatives and friends Thursday, February 12, 2015 from 6-8 PM at Ocker Funeral Home 700 Jefferson Street, Van Buren, Arkansas.

Pallbearers will be Michael Vernnon, Jeremy Vernnon, DeWayne Garner, Henry (Skip) Steele, Richie Guthrie and Rob Schmitt.
